Version history

As you work on a note and it gets saved, myrna keeps snapshots of the content over time. This version history works as a safety net: if you deleted an important passage, changed the structure too much, or just want to recover how the note looked yesterday, you can open the previous versions, review each one, and restore whichever you prefer. This page explains what these versions are, how to open the history, how to compare, and how to restore an earlier state.

What version history is

myrna keeps snapshots of the note (the versions) as you save. Each version records how the content looked at that moment, along with the date. That way, you can go back to an earlier state without having to copy the text somewhere else: the editor itself keeps a record of those steps.

Versions are created automatically from the note's saves — you don't need to mark anything manually. To avoid noise, snapshots are spaced out (at most one every few minutes of editing), and each note keeps roughly its last 30 versions — fewer for very large notes, to save space. They're meant for reference and recovery, and don't replace the current edit: the note stays the "live" version, and the history sits alongside it for when you need it.

Open the history

The history is opened from the note's Properties panel. When it opens, you see the list of versions on one side and the preview on the other.

  3. 3On the left, the list of versions appears, each identified by its date — the first one is marked "Latest saved".
  4. 4On the right, there's a read-only preview: click a version to see how the note looked at that moment.
The preview is read-only — you're looking at a snapshot of the past, not editing. Nothing changes in the note just by browsing through the versions.

Compare and choose a version

Scan the list of versions by date and use the preview on the right to check the content of each one before deciding. This helps you pinpoint exactly the moment when the passage you're looking for still existed, without touching the current note.

Restore a version

When you find the version you want to recover, just restore it. The note returns to the chosen state right away, without reloading the page.

  4. 4The note reloads in the editor already showing the chosen version's content — the "Note restored" message confirms it.
Restoring is reversible: right before overwriting, the current state is saved as a new version. If you change your mind, open the history again and go back to it (or to any other version).
Restoring replaces the note's content (the body); the current title is kept. Other open tabs and devices notice the change and won't silently overwrite it.

Locked notes

Version history follows the note's encryption. When you lock a note (or its notebook) with the Vault, the versions created before the lock are purged — they were stored unencrypted and keeping them would leak the protected content. From then on, new snapshots are stored encrypted, with the same protection as the note itself.
