Attachments and audio

Besides text and images, a note can hold files from your device and audio recordings. Attached files stay available inside the note — in the text and in a compact bar under the title — and are also gathered in the Files view, which lists everything attached across your notes, searchable by file name or note. This page shows how to attach files, record audio, browse the Files view and understand what deletion does and does not remove.

Attach a file

You can attach a file from your device to any note, in three ways:

  1. 1In the editor, place the cursor where the file should go, type "/" and pick "Insert file".
  2. 2Or simply drag a file from your computer and drop it onto the note.
  3. 3Or open the note's "Files" panel (the paperclip button at the top of the editor) and use "Attach file".

The attached file appears in two places at once: as a small clickable chip in the text (when inserted via the editor) and in a collapsible "Files" bar under the note title, showing a thumbnail or icon, the name and the size. Clicking either one opens or downloads the file.

Removing the chip from the text does not delete the file — it stays attached to the note and keeps showing in the bar and in the Files view. To actually delete it, use the note's Files panel or the Files view.
Attachments count toward your plan's storage quota.

The note's Files panel

The paperclip button at the top of the editor opens a side panel with everything attached to the current note.

  • Each entry shows a thumbnail (for images) or a type icon, the file name and the size.
  • "Attach file" (the "+" button) adds a new file to the note.
  • "Download" opens or saves the file; "Remove file" deletes the attachment for good.

Record audio

You can record audio with the microphone without leaving the editor. The recording is inserted into the note as a player that plays the clip right there.

  1. 1In the editor, place the cursor where the recording should go.
  2. 2Type "/" to open the insert menu and pick "Record audio".
  3. 3Allow microphone access if the browser asks, and make the recording.
  4. 4When you finish, the clip is uploaded and an audio player is inserted into the note, ready to play.
The recording is stored as a regular attachment of the note, so it also shows up in the Files bar, in the note's Files panel and in the Files view.

The Files view

The "Files" item in the Notes sidebar opens a view that gathers the attachments of all your notes in one place — a practical way to find a file when you do not remember which note holds it.

  • Search ("Search files…") matches both the file name and the title of the note that holds it.
  • Filter by type — "All types", "Images", "Documents", "Other" — and sort "By note", "By name", "Most recent" or "By size".
  • Each entry shows the file, the note it lives in ("In note") and its size; with a notebook selected in the sidebar, the view lists only that notebook's files.
  • Click a file to preview it; double-click (or "Go to note") jumps to the note that holds it.
  • Images preview with zoom controls, fit modes and a "Copy" button that puts the image on the clipboard; PDFs render right in the page; other types show an icon with name and size, with "Download" always available.
  • The status bar shows the selected file's size and dimensions, plus the total count and combined size of everything listed.

To delete in bulk, tick the checkboxes of one or more files and use "Delete" in the selection bar — a confirmation is asked first. If the selection belongs to a single note, "Go to note" is also offered.

Attachments of locked (encrypted) notes do not appear in the Files view: their content only becomes visible after unlocking the note itself.

Images are separate

Images have their own flow within Notes, with automatic recompression to save space and a dedicated editor for adjustments.

Images inserted in the body do not follow the regular attachment path: they are recompressed and have their own editor. See the "Insert images" and "Image editor" pages.

Deletion and cleanup

Deleting a file from the Files view or from the note's Files panel removes it permanently, from storage included. Attached files also live and die with their note: permanently deleting the note removes its attachments and inline images too.

Before emptying the trash, check that the notes there hold no attachments you still want to keep.
