Insert images

Images have their own flow inside Notes, separate from regular attachments. You can add them in three ways — by pasting, dragging, or through the "Image" option — and large images are compressed automatically on your device before upload, so they take up less space. This page covers inserting images and everything you can do with an image already in the note (resize, caption, align, view fullscreen); to crop, rotate, or adjust an image, see "Image editor".

Three ways to insert

There are three ways to place an image in a note. Use whichever is most convenient for where the file comes from: the clipboard, a file on your device, or the editor's insert menu.

Paste

Copy an image (from a website, a screenshot, or another app) and paste it right at the cursor position. It's the fastest path for screenshots.

Paste the image from the clipboard at the cursor position.Ctrl/Cmd + V

Drag and drop

Drag one or more image files from your computer and drop them onto the editor. Each image is inserted where you dropped it.

"Image" button or "/" menu

  1. 1In the editor, place the cursor where the image should go.
  2. 2Use the "Image" button in the toolbar or type "/" and choose "Image".
  3. 3An "Upload an image" block appears ("SVG, PNG, JPG or GIF (max. 10MB)").
  4. 4Select the file from your device — the block is replaced by the uploaded image.

Automatic optimization

Before upload, large images are compressed on your own device: anything bigger than about 2000 pixels or 1.5 MB is scaled down (to at most 2000 px on the longest side) and re-encoded in the efficient WebP format. If compression would not actually make the file smaller, the original is kept as is.

  • Photos and screenshots shrink dramatically with no visible loss of quality.
  • Animated GIFs and SVG vectors are never touched — they pass through unchanged.
  • The limit per image is 10 MB (after compression); above that you get the "Image too large" notice.
  • A small thumbnail is generated alongside each image and used in the Files view to load faster.

Working with an image in the note

Once inserted, the image is a block you can adjust directly:

Resize
Drag the handle in the image's corner ("Drag to resize (Ctrl keeps ratio)"). While dragging, the current size in pixels is displayed.
Caption
Click below the image ("Add caption") to write a caption that stays attached to it.
Fullscreen
Double-click the image (or use "Fullscreen" in its floating bar) to open it in the viewer, with zoom and rotation for viewing.
Floating bar
Click the image to select it: a bar appears with alignment (left, center, right), "Edit image", "Fullscreen", "Image properties" (exact width and height in pixels or %, with "Keep ratio"), "Extract text" (OCR), "Download", "Replace", and "Delete".

Where images show up

The image appears inside the note, at the point where it was inserted, and also in the Files view, which gathers the images and attachments from your notes to make them easier to find later. See the "Views and trash" page.

To crop, rotate, fix perspective, or adjust the image, see the "Image editor" page.
Deleting the image from the text is not the same as removing the attachment — the file remains in the note's storage and in the Files view. Permanently deleting the note, on the other hand, removes the image files associated with it.
